Sigmodon hispidus occurs primarily in the United States of America (from Missouri and Virginia south to Arizona, Texas and Florida). It enters Mexico in Tamaulipas and Baja California. It inhabits a variety of grassy and shrubby habitats, including tallgrass and shortgrass prairies, mesquite and palmetto savannas, early-successional habitats in open pine or deciduous forests, the periphery of swamps, old fields, croplands, etc. Populations of S. hispidus may undergo dramatic fluctuations, related to droughts and other environmental factors. Hispid Cotton Rats feed on the lower green stems of grasses, foliage, seeds, roots, and tubers; insects and other invertebrates are eaten occasionally.
